VI. Combat Phase
-----------------
FC FLAMININUS attacks the Syrian War with 2 regular legions (III,XII),
2 veteran legions (II,VI), and 2 fleets (VI, XII).
Syrian War: 6/2 (D16/S15) [45t spoils] and Antiochus III: +5 (D14/S17).
FC FLAMININUS has a strength of 6 + 5 = 11.
Combat Bonus is 11-11 = 0.
Rolls a 10 + 0 = 10; STALEMATE!! Losses = 3 legions and 3 fleets.
FLAMININUS is unhurt, but only the veteran II legion remains with him -
the rest of his forces are lost.

DI MACEDONICUS and MOH CUNCTATOR attack Philip V and 1st Macedonian War
with 12 regular legions, 4 veteran legions and 10 fleets.
1st Macedonian War: *12/10 x2 (Matching War)(D12/S11,18) [25t spoils]
+ Philip V: +6 (D15/S14) + Illyricum's base: 2/0  = 24 +6 +2 = 32.
DI MACEDONICUS and MOH CUNCTATOR have a strength of 12 +8 +5 +5 = 30.
Combat Bonus is 30 - 32 = -2.  [Macedonicus voids D/S results.]
Rolls an 8 - 2 = 6; DEFEAT!!! Losses = 2 legions and 2 fleets.
4 units lost: Legions XI and XXI; Fleets X,XI.
MACEDONICUS and CUNCTATOR are killed!
Unrest increases +2 to 6.

PROVINCIAL WAR (Cisalpine Gaul)
The province of Cisalpine Gaul must attack the 1st Punic War. [Rule 14.4]
1st Punic War: 10/5/10 (D13/S11,14) x2 (Matching War) + 3 Hamilcar
+ 7 (Hannibal) = 20 + 10 = 30.
Cisalpine Gaul base strength = 1; no armies, no fleets, no legions.
Governor Terentius has a strength of 1 + 2 = 3.
Combat Bonus is 3 - 30 = -27.
Rolls an 11 - 27 = -16; DEFEAT!!! Governor Terentius killed.
Cisalpine Gaul now adds its base strength of 1/0 to 1st Punic War.

Rome loses its province of Cisalpine Gaul.

Fabius [son of former Cunctator] becomes new Faction Leader of Rutilius.

Five Active Wars Exist (1st & 2nd Punic Wars, 1st & 2nd Macedonian Wars, and
Syrian War), so the game ends in defeat for all players.

With the departure of Scipio from northern Italy, Hannibal and Hamilcar ravaged
all of Cisalpine Gaul, defeating and killing its hapless governor Terentius.
They then marched south upon Rome, unnoposed.  Meanwhile, Phlip V of Macedon,
having defeated the great Roman force opposed to him, sent a portion of his
army by sea to land at the Bay of Naples and then march upon Rome from the south.
The Roman forces left in the Balkans were essentially left without adequate
leadership after the death in battle of Dictator Macedonicus and his Master of
the Horse Cunctator.  They did nothing useful, and with no further supplies
forthcoming from Rome, this great army eventually dissolved in hunger and despair,
until nothing was left of the army but scattered bands of pillaging marauders who
were eventually captured and enslaved by Philip's troops.
Meanwhile, over in the east, Flamininus and his one remaining legion had no fleet
to carry them home, so they began a retreat to escape the clutches of
Antiochus and his Syrian army.  Alas for them, their enemy was far too strong
and they could not find any refuge in those domains subject to Antiochus.
Starvation soon became their lot, and eventually they surrendered themselves into
slavery to Syrian masters.  Flamininus, too, became a captive of Antiochus, although
he apparently died very soon thereafter, for he henceforth disappears from history.

Two months after Philip's victory over Macedonicus, he and his Macedonians were
camped outside of Rome along with Hannibal and his Carthaginians.  The Roman
Senate, bereft of funds and forces, sought terms from the great leaders allied
against them.  But their enemies stood firm, and all they could get was a promise
to spare the lives of the Roman people at the price of their freedom.  So the
people of Rome became slaves to the Carthaginians and Macedonians.  The city of
Rome was burned and destroyed by her jealous conquerors, who took their new slaves
back to their own lands.  Italy itself was carved up into Punic and Macedonian
provinces.
As for the Senators who had led Rome into this unfortuante end, all were executed by
the victors.  Yet some later historians of Britain tell another curious tale.  They
relate that the Senate, in a last noble gesture, drew lots and sent six of its
members, one from each faction, out of harm's way before their enemies closed
the noose upon Rome.  By unanimous agreement Junius of Remus, Consul for Life, was
chosen to lead this group of Senators in their escape.  British folklore tells how
this band and their retinue sailed off to far-away Britain where their descendants
eventually included the fabled King Arthur.  But these are the tales they tell, and
whether they are true or not, none know for certain.
Finis.
