Suggestions for AWBW

It's nice to see you again, amarriner! (or should I say Aaron?)

I have a suggestion for your game. In the profile area, you should add a space for Instant Messengers, and let people see others' profiles. It would let people chat during the game, and help choosing a map.

Good idea! I'll work on that, thanks. I don't display the user information anywhere right now, but once I get to that I'll add your idea.

[EDIT] Good to see you, too, Roma!

Seeing as I'm bored and have nothing to do (Christmas holiday sucks), I'll add a suggestion that I've been thinking about:

Now, me having 56k makes AWBW slow and painful (but still fun). It would make things much easier if there was a client pack you could download containing all the images needed for AWBW. Instead of having to grab them from the site, you could just download the client pack, enable its use on your profile, and let AWBW grab the needed images straight from your hard drive, speeding up the rendering of the map. I've seen client packs used before in image-heavy MMORPG's, and it definitely speeds up the whole thing.

So how about it?

Interesting! That's a really good idea. I'll see what I can do to get it done. Not sure when I'll be able to, but I'll definitely work on it. Thanks!

I'll try to get this done early this week, actually.

Well basically I'd make a download available of all the graphics used by the AWBW engine. Then, if you checked a box on your profile, the site would access the local copies of the images on your hard drive rather than downloading them from the server. It would make the pages load quicker (especially on a dial-up connection) and would decrease my bandwidth. ;)

I've almost got a solution ready, but I need to figure a few more things out.

suggestion

Postby RobKohr » Mon Dec 20, 2004 2:57 pm

1)
Player ratings and ranking.

For this I suggest counting unresponsive players as a loss, and either giving no points or minimal points to the other players (to prevent abuse)

2)
Time restrictions

In creating a game the creator sets the turn time (perhaps with exceptions for weekends).

3)
Simultanious turns

This would make the game very different from advance wars, and maybe an idea for a future variant.

Basically some sort of system similar to diplomacy where all players can put in their orders at the same time. There would be two phases, movement and attack/action. For movement, if opposing unit paths cross there is a collision point and both units stop next to eachother (perhaps with a suprise effect decreasing their abilities during attack phase).

The benifit of this is that more then 4 could play since their won't be a wait time for all other players to take a turn. Also, it could lend to some clever tactics.

Hey Rob.

1 --> We're getting there. Now that the games are ending and the system seems to be assigning winners properly I can start working on stats.

2 --> That's a good idea

3 --> Very interesting! Certainly would change the game a bit! Not sure when I'd be able to get something like this going, but it's very intriguing!

3 --> Cool, I would be happy to help a little if you want someone to work with. I am very experienced with php. After you finish up the details on the current system, send me an email:

I was going to work on a system based of aw with simultanious turns a while back, but I never had the time to devote to it (work full time and go to school). Thanks for putting in the effort to make a great game. It is really appreciated. I know it is time consuming.

3 -> Cool, thanks. I'll definitely let you know. I like Diplomacy a lot, so that would be pretty fun. :)

Glad you're enjoying the site. I like tinkering with this stuff, and I love AW (though I'm actually not all that great at it!) so it's win-win for me.

I almost have this finished, except the images don't seem to display properly from the hard drive. Some do, some don't. I'm using the file:/// protocol for the <img> HTML tag. As I said, some of the images appear, but some don't. However, if I right-click on one that doesn't show up, select properties, copy and paste the URL to the address bar and hit enter the image does appear. So the path is correct, but the browser doesn't seem to want to display it. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Yep, this one will probably not be anytime soon, unfortunately. Someday!

Can you implement a way so I can show my maps on another forum? It would be fun to have cannons for people.
