A great place to start learning about music is to pick up an instrument. It does get tougher the older you get, but there are people who don't learn until later in life and turn around to write wonderful music. The guitar or piano is a great place to start (it may sound cliche, but they really are good ways to learn). Piano is definitely harder to learn, but the layout of a piano/keyboard basically lays out the foundation of music in an easy-to-see way. I'm not sure I could say much more without using a bit more of the musical vocabulary though :P

A large part of my learning was from my parents letting me take piano lessons. I took them for about five or six years before giving up on it in fifth grade. Then when I got into high school, I took a music theory class and the band director who was teaching the class mentioned that I should join the marching band. So plenty of it is what you get exposed to and taught at an early age, from my experience. If I didn't express interest in a man playing piano at a mall, my parents never would've asked if I wanted to take lessons, and if I didn't take the theory class I probably wouldn't be having so much fun in band or writing a few things of my own every now and then.

A very nice consequence of learning to play piano (and eventually, marimba) is that, as you get better/more experienced, you understand the theory more. And in reverse, the more you understand the theory, the easier it is to apply to learning and sight-reading music. Things like "Oh, this hand is playing these notes, so the other hand must be doing something with these specific notes" happen.

If you ever want help or want to learn about anything specific, hetchel, I'm always around here. I even helped Walker when he wanted to know a few things for some background rap beats ;) I'm usually on the IRC whenever my laptop is on.

If you couldn't tell, I could go on and on about this stuff >_>

Not to derail this thread, but Walker raps?

I love the sounds of guitar, but my fingers hurt after thirty seconds. :(
Piano is nice. I could play piano. Well I already can, just... Not with many fingers :)

Yes, that is exactly what I want!
Then I should really learn piano. But I think I'd prefer to read the music with vertical bars like it is shown on youtube videos, rather than the usual antiquated format, which I find to be strangely encoded :P

For guitar, you'd have to build calluses. So I don't play guitar. I've got one, and would love to know how, but I just never pick it up :/

I'm not really that well versed in the vertical bar business myself. Most music will be with that crazy encryption, though :P

Interesting. I would strongly, strongly suggest you look into Touhou music for piano. Look up "Touhou Synthesia" on youtube and try to find simpler songs. At the very least, you'll get to see a lot of incredibly well composed music. Many of them are incredibly difficult for beginners, but just keep going through the related Synthesia videos. Maybe you can only play 10 seconds of part of a song at first. Keep going. Eventually, something will stick, I guarantee it.

An easier one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9p5jAy0eA84

Much harder one, but you get what I'm getting at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fu8dAbEtX6g

The main problem people have with music is that, like anything, the issue is practice. Imagine me, coming into AWBW fairly new in the grand scheme of things, and expecting to be amazing at everything. I am exactly as good at AWBW as my total games would indicate. I play Blazblue enough to demolish anyone I know personally, and I know more about BlazBlue theory than is probably healthy, but I'd get my ass handed to me at Evo 2012, simply because I don't practice as much as I could, and theory does not equal practice in the slightest. This is the main issue with anything, including music. Practice, practice, practice. When you aren't practicing, listen to absolutely everything. Listen to music you love, but more importantly, listen to music you don't love. Listen to music you hate. It's important, it gives you perspective. Question why you like or hate different types of music to begin with.

If you want to get into writing music, there's an insanely easy program to use right here.
http://www.anvilstudio.com/

It sounds silly, but I've been writing music for many, many years and I still use Anvil for basic ideas. Never, ever get discouraged. Download it, click around on the keyboard randomly, see how it sounds. Listen to more music, try to replicate what you're hearing on the virtual keyboard, even just a note or two. Practice.

Also, very happy you liked that Animals as Leaders song. That album is called Weightless, and I highly recommend buying it if you're interested.

I swear I need to buy you an xbawks and BlazBlueCS2. That's been taking up so much of my time. That and modding Company of Heroes. And making Arma 2 missions for people. And work and college. And two new wonderful books. Regardless, I'll try to make it on there at some point to play your fighter. In the meantime, enjoy my personal flavor of fighting game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVfDbMJ3tBQ

For the uninitiated, all those "white flashes" on a character you see is a player blocking at the last second (Cool benefits from it), those yellow things under the lifebars are guard primers (various actions affect how many you have, run out and you get guard broken, the AWBW of the opponent getting a second turn, which you want to avoid at all costs), and the red dealies under the character portraits are bursts (Which can affect you very positively or negatively if you use it wrong, and you generally have 0 or 1 per match).

I'd say this is still relevant to the thread because I do try to play this every day, and I will argue to the grave that BlazBlueCS2 specifically is one of the greatest competitive fighters ever made, and that's coming from someone that's played way too many fighters over the years. That first round alone is a great example of most of the reasons why it is good, but much like watching a sped-up AWBW replay, it's hard to explain to a non-player why it's so good.

Anyways, back to work for me. I'll try to get some more music out at some point, and get on irc for IaMP Jam, but my schedule is going to be pretty packed over this week. Plus some nice people sent me some wonderful info on making custom content in Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, so uh...less time for everything else.

Yes, buy me a 360. I leave the one I have at home because I barely play it and my brothers play it more than I do. Also, despite the very little time I spent on BB, I'm better than one of my friends by a lot because I learned how to grab. Grabbing is fun.

You break grabs by simply hitting the grab button within a certain window after being grabbed, and they aren't as reliable in competitive as you'd think. With the exception of Tager, most grabs are stuffed by 2a, 5a, or 5b before they come out. You generally use them if the opponent goes for an overhead or other slow move and you think you have the time to interrupt it.

Neutral grabs (purple grabs) are insanely easy to break, lots of time.
Counter grabs (green grabs) and harder to break, less time.
If you use a command grab, basically command grabs are like Counter grabs on Neutral, so harder, and command grabs are unbreakable during actual counter situations.

But spamming grabs in a serious match won't work, trust me. Ragna 5b, Tsubaki 2a and 5b, Hazama 5b, most lights and mediums will stuff grab spam, usually netting you anywhere from 800 damage to 3k or more on the poor attempted grappler, situationally (BlazBlue characters have between around 8.5k and 13k health).

The only character in-game based truly around maybe a third of grab game is Tager. High guard primers and health along with solid grabs, but he only has one very useful projectile that takes time or moves to charge, and he needs his guard primers because of his lack of movement options. Definitely a solid character though. I'm more a Tsubaki player, but I have a solid rating as Tager.

Found a good example of how to use grabs. Watch this one until 2:10
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RI1cJNUQJtc

Also a really solid escape from pressure at 1:47

In short, grabs in BlazBlue are VERY similar to Street Fighter. It borrows from the best, which is most of what makes it such a good game, taking all the good ideas from existing fighters and putting them in one game.

Oh right, and if you need a real reason to play the game, look no further than:

Oh ok.

A lot of my friends got the game but I just cant bring myself to play it. The voice acting brings me to tears and of course the characters have to yell out a entire sentence EVERY TIME I PUSH A BUTTON,
