The yin yang map looks interesting, gameplay wise, but it's not league material. The concept and original idea is pretty good, but it's implementation is not. I'd still play on it :)
I do think it loooks ugly, because of the following things I often find ugly:
-HQ with clumped property
-plain desert
-straight pipes that are also not useful
-bad centre
-impossible reefs
-clumped reefs
-sea with no reefs
-HQ in pipes
-stand alone uncapturable seaport
-mountains next to sea (reef)
-wannabe circle that is not round
The map also has large FTA, because the BM infantry is on the wrong base, and OS can get the third base sooner, and then has two first turn bases near the centre while BM has none, so OS can take the contested centre and win the game.

Perhaps my point was not clear.....
i would equally say that its ridiculous for me to say the map is beautiful in response to someone else saying it is ugly .... it obviously goes both ways ... that was my point......its purely subjective as i said earlier.
The crux being that thinking its ugly is hardly a valid reason not to use the map in leagues particularly when at least 7 other voters think its good map.(oh by the way its not my map ... i am equally disposed to promote anyones map if i feel its good. i am usually defending other peoples maps!)
Of course Benbever has a valid criticism over the map fta, thats an entirely different and fixable matter overlooked by every other critic.

Blanci, aesthetics do play a minor role. When I look at a map, I say to myself, "Why would I want to play on it?". When I looked at Yin-Yang, I noticed four separate areas that made the map difficult to look at. While other people obviously have different tastes (I certainly cannot speak for everyone), I know that at least for me if a map doesn't look good then I'll have no desire to play on it.

Obviously I wasn't anywhere near specific enough as ben was, but if I can easily find four pretty major aesthetic blunders (Lack of terraining--examples 1, 2, 3, or misterraining--example 4) with just a cursory glance, then the map can severely be improved upon. And this is even before noting what ben said about FTA.

While the map may be fun, fun is a purely subjective thing, and what is fun for one person cannot be assumed to be overarching for everyone. When I look at that map, I don't think "fun", I think "bland map = bland games", and blandness is not something we look for in league maps.

I recommend every map ever made. Now you have to play on all of them or don't talk about them ever.

blanci wrote:You are just being ridiculous by claiming a map is ugly when other people think it is beautiful.

Having an opinion is being ridiculous??? What the f**k?

Also there is nothing wrong gameplaywise with an area of desert(region 1) as i have been trying to explain in many places.

There is lots wrong aesticswise in that area which is what others have been trying to explain in many places. And for the record, gameplaywise it's all the same terrain which takes away from strategy such as fighting over cities or at least better defensive terrain. There is no reward for controlling that 6x6ish clump of plains at all, so you may as well ignore it.

And I already said the sea plays only a decorative role (areas 2, 3 and 4).

Actually, it only tries to be decorative. In reality it's just empty space that takes attention away from the center where the action and yin yang art- the supposed focal point- are. If you have a different opinion, you're being ridiculous according to you.

theres nothing wrong with some useless features on a map.... its quite realistic.

There is something wrong when the useless features detract from the visual aspect without adding anything. And if realism is the ultimate goal even at the cost of gameplay and aestetics, why is it symmetrical? Symmetry isn't realistic at all. Square clumps of terrain and tanks the size of forests aren't realistic either, so a realistic map could be made better with something along the lines of photoshop if realism is what you're after.

Since he wanted hard evidence, here's one, the map is so large that it'll take forever to play on, and is a total pain in the ass in fog

echelon i think you should be careful about putting words into psychos mouth ....... he may bite your fingers
Oh and tyrael ... a re-reading of the thread shows that after i said it was beautiful and rast said it was ugly that someone else said that it was "obviously ugly" .... now that is going beyond expressing an opinion, that is expressing thoughts of a universal nature indicating that my opinion is wrong and hence of lesser value ... Such a claim is ridiculous in light of the 7/10 rating from 7 votes. So i was not saying someones not entitled to an opinion, quite the reverse, i was clearly stating that its ridiculous for someone to claim his personal opinion to be universal, in the face of contrary opinion.
